The world of perfume can be a confusing place, with all sorts of fancy terms like ‘Eau de Parfum’ and ‘Eau de Toilette’ being thrown around. You’ve probably come across these different categories when looking for a perfume. But do you know what are the differences between each and how to choose the right one for you?
The key to understand this is fragrance oil concentration. So, here’s a break down the different categories based on their fragrance oil concentration.
How Are Perfumes Categorized?
The magic behind a fragrance’s strength and longevity: fragrance oil concentration. This refers to the percentage of pure perfume oil present in the fragrance mixture. Perfume are categorized according to the concentration they have. From lightest to strongest you have:
Eau Fraîche

This is the most subtle fragrance type, with a barely-there 1-3% oil concentration. Think of it like the “bare minimum” of perfume. However, it doesn’t contain larger quantities of alcohol. With only 1 to 3% of fragrance oils, it’s basically perfume diluted with a lot of water and because of that, the scent longevity is limited (1-2 hours). With only 1 to 3% of fragrance oils, it’s basically perfume diluted with a lot of water and because of that, the scent longevity is limited.
Often citrus-based or green scents, it is suitable for daywear in hot weather or layering other fragrances. It’s great for those with sensitive skin or who prefer a delicate and refreshing scents.
Eau de Cologne (EDC)

Cologne, is one of the lightest and most refreshing form of fragrance. It typically contains 2-5% perfume oil mixed with a higher alcohol concentration. EDC is perfect for a subtle, invigorating burst of fragrance and is commonly used for a quick pick-me-up throughout the day. It’s perfect for hot weather and those who want to smell fresh, without smelling “perfumed”. However, with only 2 to 5% concentration, it also has a short lifespan, around 2 hours.
Eau de Toilette (EDT)
Eau de Toilette strikes a good balance between potency and longevity. It contains a slightly higher concentration of fragrance oil (usually 5-15%) and is blended with alcohol. EDT is perfect is you like a scent but do not want to leave a trail behind you or do not like very strong scents. That makes them suitable for everyday wear as they offer a moderate scent that lasts several hours–around 3 to 5 hours. EDTs are also very versatile and depending on the perfume, they can be worn at the office or on a night out.

Eau de Parfum (EDP)
If you want to make an impression entering a room, and a long-lasting scent, EDP is for you. With a higher concentration of 15-20%, EDP provides a rich, complex aroma that lingers on the skin for hours. It’s an excellent choice for special occasions or when you want a scent to last throughout the day. And at this concentration, your perfume can last between 4 to 6 hours. It’s definitely much more of a statement perfume.
Parfum (or Extrait de Parfum)
With the highest concentration of perfume oils, this is the strongest, most powerful and opulent perfume out there. First, while parfum and extrait de parfum are sometimes used interchangeably, there’s actually a difference between the two. Parfum has a 20%-40% concentration. Extrait de parfum might have a slightly higher concentration of fragrance oil compared to a parfum (around 2-4% more). This could lead to a more intense scent experience. However, this isn’t always the case, and some brands may use the terms interchangeably even with identical concentrations.
This is la crème de la crème when it comes to longevity and strength. It’s luxurious, with luxurious ingredients, luxurious longevity and, you guessed it, luxurious price.
With parfum, you might have to break the bank but, it is so powerful only few drops are enough. And it will last between 6 to 8 hours.
